Priming a new engine prior to first start-up is really, really, really important (really). This video from Jeff Smith will show you how to do it on a newer engine. (Image/Jeff Smith’s YouTube Channel)

Recently, we ran an article on knowing the difference between oil pump primers. While the story focused on earlier V8s with distributor-driven oil pumps, we also touched briefly on modern engines and engine prelubers. And that’s an important distinction, because newer engines (like the GM LS, Gen III. Hemi, and Ford Mod Motor) don’t have distributors and instead use different oil pump designs.

So after the article was published, a few folks mentioned that they’d like to see a more in-depth look at how to prime and prelube a modern engine.

Enter OnAllCylinders contributor Jeff Smith. His YouTube Channel, Jeff Smith’s Garage, is packed with informative videos. And, lo-and-behold, he’s got a really good one on how to prime and pressure-lube a late-model V8 motor.
