Muscle Car Match-Ups/March Madness

’68 Hemi Dart vs. ’68 Hemi Barracuda Shaping Up to be Greatest Imaginary Race Ever

[UPDATE: Voting ended at 11 a.m. on April 5. You can read what happened here.]

“We have a Muscle Car Match-Ups emergency,” the morning text read, so we knew this was serious business.

More than 4,100 votes were cast to choose which of the iconic 1968 Hemi-powered Mopars would be moving on to the 2019 OnAllCylinders Muscle Car Match-Ups Final Four.

Votes were cast on Facebook. The 1968 Plymouth Barracuda Hemi 426 won there.

Votes were cast on Instagram. The 1968 Dodge Hemi Dart won there.

And in the end, so few votes separated the two that we could not mathematically prove that one vehicle had won over the other. Facebook doesn’t provide the exact number of votes. The results looked like this:

About 2,300 votes were cast, as you can see in the image. But Facebook voting rounds to the nearest hundred, so that “2.3K” could be anything between 2,251 votes and 2,349 votes.

When you do the math straight-up, 52% of 2,300 votes equals 1,196 in favor of the Barracuda. And 48% of 2,300 equals 1,104 for the Dart. That’s a 92-vote margin favoring the Barracuda.

But over on Instagram, we do have access to precise numbers. The Hemi Dart got 984 votes. The Barracuda got 845 votes. That’s a 139-vote margin favoring the Dart.

Add all of that up, and you’re left with the Dart pulling in fewer than 50 votes more than the Barracuda, which is well within the margin of error on Facebook’s poll results.

So we did the only fair (and most-fun) thing we could think of — we sent this match-up to overtime for a re-vote.

We’re Witnessing History

Is this the most epic, thrilling, edge-of-your-seat race between two totally imaginary 1968 Hemi-powered Mopars to be determined by social-media voting in world history?

Yes. Yes, it is.

Both cars were born in 1968. Both have muscle-bound 426 cubic-inch elephants powering them. And both ran 10.5-second quarter-miles from the factory.

So it stands to reason the voting is so close.

Real-time update: After more than 1,500 votes early into the re-vote (a large-enough data sample to accurately predict the winner of national political elections), fewer than 10 votes separated these two amazing cars.

Do you have strong feelings about either one of these Hemi Mopars?

If so, you can and should help propel one to the Final Four.

After all, history is on the line.
