Running a big cam with lots of overlap in your muscle car? Then you probably already know that it significantly reduces the amount of engine vacuum, particularly at idle.

Why is that important? Well, if you’ve got power brakes, they rely on engine vacuum to function.

In other words, no vacuum, no power brakes.

…So if you don’t want that kind of excitement in your life, a supplemental vacuum pump powered by your vehicle’s electrical system is a smart move.

Enter Summit Racing and its lineup of 12V Vacuum Pumps.

These pumps wire into your electrical harness and supply up to an additional 23 “Hg of vacuum—easily enough to supply a vacuum-assist power brake system at idle.

Perfect for Restorations Too

While these pumps are smart solutions for big cam engines, there’re equally handy in restorations (or really, for any older vehicle that uses a lot of vacuum-assist systems).

Take vintage Corvettes for instance: A 1972 Corvette uses engine vacuum to operate both pop-up headlight doors, as well as the separate wiper door up by the cowl—along with the power brakes (if so-equipped). Weak vacuum can affect how these work, often causing plenty of frustration along the way.

Other vehicles use vacuum in plenty of other systems as well, for controlling everything from HVAC blender doors to the carburetor choke—heck, there’s a good chance that your ignition timing is dependent on vacuum too.

So yeah, having strong, reliable vacuum is important, which makes augmenting your vacuum system with one of these electric pumps a smart move.

These quiet and low-vibration 12 volt pumps use a MAVP sensor instead of a tricky switch/relay setup, so your vacuum recovers fast, and the pump ensures a rock-solid 17 to 23 “Hg of vacuum. The kits include five feet of 3/8” vacuum hose, a fused wiring harness, and all the hardware and fasteners you need to get it into your vehicle. Heck, Summit Racing even tosses in rubber isolation washers to mitigate any chance of vibration or noise entering the cabin.
