The latest Summit Racing project is a Ram 2500 Heavy Duty pickup truck equipped with a Cummins 6.7L diesel engine.

But unlike a lot of project builds, the Summit Racing team didn’t start with a showroom-fresh vehicle here. Nope, this 2018 Ram 2500 is already a long haul, high mileage workhorse, with plenty of snow, rain, and dirt under its tires.

So the goal of this series is to show you how a few upgrades, some vital maintenance, and a little bit of elbow grease on a road-weary rig can be a smart alternative to buying an all new truck—and much easier on the wallet too.

If there was ever any doubt that this particular 2018 Ram 2500 truck had seen plenty of use, then one look at its brakes quickly erases it. While the calipers just needed some typical cleanup, the rotors looked like they’d been submerged in Lake Erie for the last decade.

Although the Summit Racing team planned on installing a Power Stop Z36 Truck and Tow Brake Upgrade Kit anyway, the first step was getting the seized calipers and rotors off.

If you’ve ever done a brake job on a vehicle from the Rust Belt, you may already have a process for removing stubborn brake parts—but if you haven’t, this video has some handy techniques for dealing with rusty, corroded parts. (Spoiler Alert: grab a hammer and breaker bar.)

Once the rotors are off, follow along as the Summit Racing folks bolt up a set of new pads and rotors, specifically tailored for hard-working trucks and tow rigs. You’ll get some brake job tips along the way too.
