Tonneau covers—for us—are clearly the top truck accessory ever. You have many choices when it comes to choosing tonneau covers, as there are several different designs. All have their particular postive characteristics.
If you’re adding a tonneau cover to your truck, style-wise, there are no wrong choices. Only several degrees of right. You decide.
Types of Tonneau Covers
Soft Roll-Up Tonneau Covers
Soft roll-up tonneau covers are the most common style used on trucks today because they are typically the least expensive option and also allow for easy access to all parts of your truck bed. Soft roll-up covers come with bed rails which keep the cover secured with snaps, Velcro straps, or another type of fastener.
Folding Tonneau Covers
In the folding tonneau covers category, you’ll find both hard and soft versions. The number of folding sections vary based on the length of your truck bed, but usually number three or four, and allow you to quickly and easily access your truck bed. You’ll spend a little more on a folding tonneau compared to a soft roll-up, but post-installation, there’s often much less work involved.
Hard Tonneau Covers
Hard tonneau covers are large, one-piece shells built from durable polymers, providing the ultimate in cargo and truck bed protection. Hard tonneaus are available in multiple colors to match your truck. They pop up from the rear, technically a hinged tonneau, but with automotive-grade impact resistance.
Hinged Tonneau Covers
Hinged tonneau covers function like hard tonneaus, providing easy lift access to your truck bed. They are typically less expensive and much lighter than their hard-cover counterparts.
Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Covers
Hard roll-up tonneau covers provide the protective strength, durability, and security of hard covers, but also the flexibility truck owners appreciate from soft roll-up covers. It’s the best of both worlds—lots of flexibility and lots of toughness.
Retractable Tonneau Covers
Retractable tonneau covers are available in both manual and electric-powered versions. Retractable tonneaus tend to be the most expensive style of tonneau cover available, but many truck owners love the look and ease-of-access a retractable cover provides—all the accessibility of a roll-up, but without any work. When budget isn’t much of a factor, a retractable tonneau cover is hard to beat.
