The latest Summit Racing project is a Ram 2500 Heavy Duty pickup truck equipped with a Cummins 6.7L diesel engine.

But unlike a lot of project builds, the Summit Racing team didn’t start with a showroom-fresh vehicle here. Nope, this 2018 Ram 2500 is already a long haul, high mileage workhorse, with plenty of snow, rain, and dirt under its tires.

So the goal of this series is to show you how a few upgrades, some vital maintenance, and a little bit of elbow grease on a road-weary rig can be a smart alternative to buying an all new truck—and much easier on the wallet too.

With as many miles as the Ram has on its odometer, its no surprise that the truck’s bed was nicked, scratched, and scarred from hundreds of hauling jobs.

And since there are plenty of more of those in its future, the Summit Racing team chose a spray-in bedliner to protect its bed from whatever gets tossed in the back.

Note how this bedliner application follows the previous episode, in which any serious rust issues were addressed and corrected first, before applying the bed coating. That’s important, because rust never sleeps, and it can quietly creep under your finish to eat away at the underlying metal—and with a heavy coating like a bedliner, you may not even notice it’s happening.

Again with the help of a Summit Racing paint and body expert, follow long as the Ram’s bed gets properly prepped and ready before spraying in the bedliner. (Like pretty much any painting job, proper surface prep is essential to ensuring the coating’s durability and adhesion.)

Finally, when it’s time to start spraying, this video gives you some handy insight on how to properly lay down the coating to ensure it looks great and lasts for years.
