LAS VEGAS, NV — Electric vehicles.
Some hate their existence. And some are embracing what they feel will be part of the future of automotive performance.
Count David Borla of Borla Performance as one who sees opportunity with electric vehicles. Like many others, he acknowledges electric-powered cars and trucks are missing some the extra sensory stuff. Stuff like…say, exhaust noise.
So he went to work.
Borla and his team have developed what’s known as Active Performance Exhaust Sound, initially just for the Mustang Mach-E. The system was introduced at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas and earned a new product award from show judges. Active Performance Sound essentially brings back the exhaust rumble of the Mustang. It’s not just a noise maker either. The system ties into the CAN-BUS system and measures things like throttle position and engine load to recreate an accurate, responsive exhaust sound.
But Borla makes exhaust systems, right?
“What we really do is we make cars sound cool,” Borla said, when asked about the new system. “We’re staying right in our lane, making EV’s sound cool. And whatever comes after that, we’ll make that sound cool, too.”

David Borla shows you how this system works and fires it up in the video below. According to Borla, the cost and time to install are roughly the same as with an exhaust system.

Might as well add exhaust smell while you’re at it. That would make it authentic.
Pretty amazing – BUT if I recall, he said on All Girl Garage, there will be more “electric horsepower, grunt sound” rather than only combustion. Mercedes has one that is a kind of realistic Sci-Fi sound, but it DOES help the driver get feedback and satisfaction! The sense of your rate of acceleration does come from the sound and vibration so, go Borla, can’t wait!
