Jeep finally introduced the world to its new Jeep Wrangler JL at the LA Auto Show this week. (You can read more about the JL’s specs in this press release from FCA US LLC.)
And, while most details on the new Wrangler JL had already been leaked/confirmed, the folks at Jeep had one last surprise for fans of their iconic off-roader.
It’s going electric for the 2020 model year.
During the Wrangler JL reveal event, the head of the Jeep brand, Mike Manley, made it clear that the new electric Jeep is coming soon.
“A full plug-in electric Jeep Wrangler will be available in 2020, furthering our commitment to all those who value the responsible, sustainable enjoyment of the great outdoors,” Manley said. He continued saying the move to electric power will help in “future proofing this Wrangler for generations to come.”
Though Jeep did not release any details on the new electronic drivetrain, we’re guessing that it will be rigorously trail-tested to ensure that it will maintain the Wrangler’s off-road capabilities.
The electric option will join the already robust list of engines available for the new Wrangler—including an all-new 2.0L DOHC direct-injection turbo four cylinder that uses a new eTorque system.
Jeep says the eTorque system is designed to increase fuel economy, and will utilize auto engine stop/start, electric power assist, extended fuel shut-off, transmission shift management, intelligent battery charging, and regenerative braking.
Jeep owners can also select from the venerable 3.6L Pentastar engine carried over from the previous Wrangler JK or a 3.0L Turbodiesel V6 sourced from Fiat Chyrsler’s Italy-based VM Motori.
We just hope Jeep is clever enough to shape the Wrangler’s new battery packs like Jerry Cans.
