By not breaking them in properly, you set yourself up to experience overheating, the breakdown of your gear oil, and ultimately, total gear failure.

The instructions are simple enough. Drive lightly and carefully for the first 500 miles, with a few important notes along the way, like cool-down periods and changing gear oil after the first 500 miles.
