Terrible news is gripping the motorsports community today, as we’re learning that veteran race car driver Greg Biffle was among those lost in a tragic plane crash just outside of Statesville, North Carolina.

While information is still emerging, it was Biffle’s own private Cessna C550 that crashed near the Statesville Regional Airport, taking with it the lives of Biffle’s wife and children as well.

Biffle is best remembered as a stock car driver, campaigning in both the ARCA and NASCAR series, earning a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Championship in 2000, before stepping into the Busch Series—where he grabbed Rookie of the Year honors in 2001. The next year in 2002, Biffle took home the NASCAR Busch Series championship.

After he moved up to the Cup Series, Biffle notched 19 wins. Biffle also competed in the IROC Series along with the 24 Hours of Daytona, and raced Stadium Super Trucks later in his career.

This news is still breaking at this time, but the death of Greg Biffle and several family members has been confirmed by multiple outlets.

Greg Biffle was 55 years old.

Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
