Fans of the classic 1968 movie “Bullitt” often argue the movie had two stars: Steve McQueen and his 1968 Mustang GT.

In truth, there were three stars. There was only one Steve McQueen, of course, but there were actually two Mustang GTs. Chances are you’re familiar with the iconic Highland Green GT that appeared in most of the movie’s scenes. This legendary GT was preserved and has been sold three times over the years. However, the pampered star had a stunt double that appeared in the movie’s legendary chase scene. That Highland Green GT—the one that did much of the work in the movie—has been missing.

Until now.

Ford expert Kevin Marti has now confirmed that a 1968 Ford Mustang found recently in a Mexican junkyard is the authentic 1968 “Bullitt” Mustang GT stunt car from the movie. Marti traveled to Mexicali to inspect the car after it discovered in Baja California Sur.

Marti Auto Works maintains the production database for every Ford built from 1967-2012, and its Marti Reports are a trusted source in the classic car world. Marti was familiar with VIN numbers from the two “Bullitt” Mustangs and was able to confirm the authenticity of the original VIN plate with the correct numbers.

“I’m 100-percent sure it’s authentic,” Marti told Fox News.

The car is currently is owned by Hugo Sanchez and Ralph Garcia, Jr., who plan a full restoration for the car. When pulled from the junkyard, the powertrain was missing and its famous green exterior was covered in white paint. A few of the modifications from filming remained, though, including strut tower reinforcements for its stunt car duties.
