The late models are gone.

A few old-school hot rods remain.

And yes, there’s still plenty of ’60s and ’70s American muscle to go around. Our 2016 Muscle Car Match-Ups field has been narrowed to a “Sweet 16,” but the most intriguing pairings and potential showdowns still lie ahead.

For example:

How would a Superbird fare against a Cyclone?

How well would your Boss stand up to a Judge?

What’s more killer: a Cobra or a Barracuda?

Stay tuned as Muscle Car Match-Ups (Hot Rod Edition) rolls on. And don’t forget to review our original post for details on how to vote!

Second Round Match-Ups

1970 Chevy 454 Chevelle SS vs. 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429

1970-Chevelle-vs-1969-Boss-429

It’s a classic Chevy vs. Ford match-up!

The muscled-up Chevrolet made quick, easy work of the ’62 Dodge Polara 413 Max Wedge in the first round, while the Boss 429 rolled over the venerable 1964 Pontiac GTO. It sets up the duel we envisioned when we laid out the brackets a couple weeks ago.

Chevy guys will extol the merits of the Chevelle’s powerful LS6 option. Ford gurus will talk about the rarity of the ’69 Boss 429.

Who wins? You decide.

1941 Willys vs. 1969 Pontiac GTO (the Judge)

1941-WIllys-vs-1969-GTOWhile the Boss tries to live up to its name against the Chevelle, the ’69 GTO Judge will try to issue a death sentence to the 1941 Willys. It won’t be easy as the Willys proved its case to be in our field by eliminating the 1964 Cutlass 442 in round one. The Willys has served as blank canvas for many hot rodders, who add their own powerplants. It’s been a force on the dragstrip, while the legendary Judge has ruled the streets. The Judge dispatched the 1955 Chrysler C-300 in the opening round.

Who rules here?

1970 Buick GSX vs. 1973 Trans Am SD-455

1970-GSX-vs-1973-Trans-AmIt’s not exactly Chevy vs. Ford, but the Buick GSX and Pontiac Trans Am SD-455 will square off for supremacy amongst the GM crowd. The Pontiac took out another of the General’s darlings — the 1968 Hurst Olds — in the first round. The GSX only needed partial throttle to run over the 1963 Ford Thunderbird M-Code.

It’s 1970s muscle vs. 1970s muscle.

It’s 455 cubic inches vs. 455 cubic inches.

Something has to give.

1957 Corvette vs. 1969 Dodge Charger R/T

1957-Vette-vs-1969-Charger

Congratulations, 1957 Corvette!

You defeated the Plymouth Sport Fury in the first round, and now you get to square up against its muscled-up younger cousin in the second round.

And he’s not happy.

The 1969 Dodge Charger R/T absolutely beat up on the ’62 Pontiac Catalina 421 Super Duty in the first round and is looking to avenge the loss of its Plymouth relative in the second round.

Of course, the legendary “Fuelie” Vette fears no one.

1969 Chevy Yenko 427 Nova vs. 1965 Shelby Cobra 427

1969-Nova-vs-1965-CobraShelby vs. Yenko.

Ford power vs. Chevrolet power.

Champion vs. champion.

What’s not to like about this match-up? Of all the accolades each of these legendary cars has earned, the most impressive is probably that both are former Muscle Car Match-Ups champions. Of course, we may be a little biased here.

The point is, this is a big-time battle. Let your voice be heard.

1970 Plymouth Superbird vs. 1967 Mercury Cyclone 427

1970-Superbird-vs-1967-CycloneHere’s our upset special.

The Mercury Cyclone didn’t perform particularly well in our competition last year, so we’d label its first-round victory over the Challenger Hellcat as the biggest upset of last week.

As a reward, the ultra-rare Cyclone will do battle with another rare bird: the ’70 Plymouth Superbird. The Superbird took out the ’68 ½ Mustang Cobra Jet last week to advance against the mighty Cyclone.

1970 Plymouth HEMI ‘Cuda vs. 1955 Chevy Bel Air

1970-Cuda-vs-1955-Bel-AirOn paper, it’s a mismatch.

It’s the almighty HEMI engine against the original small block Chevy engine. But what the Tri-Five lacks in tire-shredding horsepower, it more than makes up for in historical significance. It was the first V8-powered Chevrolet to have commercial success and set the stage for the small block’s remarkable success and incredibly long run. Plus, it’s arguably one of the most recognizable and still-desired American cars of all time.

Vote and have your say.

1970 Dodge Challenger R/T vs. 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

1970-Challenger-vs-1969-CamaroAlthough the modern day Challenger was sent home early, the 1970 Challenger R/T remains alive and well. This mighty Mopar will go up against the vaunted 1969 Camaro ZL1 and its all-aluminum and highly underrated 427 big block.

Both cars had rather easy paths to the second round, but things are about to get much, much tougher. It’s Chevy vs. Mopar, with your votes deciding the winner.
