In 1964, the Pontiac GTO helped launch the muscle car era of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Combining a larger cubic-inch engine with the Pontiac Tempest’s midsize design, the GTO basically cemented the formula for the American muscle car. The basic template was duplicated in cars like the Chevelle SS, Cutlass 442, Dodge Charger, and countless other legendary performance vehicles throughout the next decade.
