On any given day or time, the lot outside a Summit Racing store can turn into an impromptu mini car show, depending on who’s stopped by the store. “Hey, look! A Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am!”

And then Pontiac enthusiasts worldwide collectively make this noise.

This pretty machine is a 1976 Pontiac Trans Am.

The Smokey and the Bandit version is a 1977. The most-obvious difference is the quad headlights upfront on the ’77. And of the course, the missing T-top.

But as a second-generation Trans Am, it still gets to be part of the special club. With or without a membership card, this ’76 was worth a closer look.
