The public is not often surprised by vehicle introductions these days, so it was fun to see the almost giddy response from attendees at the New York Auto Show Wednesday when General Motors unveiled the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 after a 12-year hiatus.

The long-rumored return of the Z/28 Camaro, which is expected to go on sale as early as this fall, was confirmed yesterday, and is sure to please Camaro and horsepower fans worldwide.

The new Z/28 will feature the LS7 V8 engine currently powering the Chevy Corvette Z06. Chevy officials say it will deliver 500 horsepower and 470 foot-pounds of torque, and is mated to a six-speed manual TREMEC gearbox.
