Las Vegas, Nevada – There is perhaps no sector of the gearhead world poised for more innovation than the realm of battery technology.

Case in point: sodium-ion battery chemistry.

And that’s precisely what the folks at Antigravity Batteries previewed for us during the 2025 SEMA Show.

While sodium-ion technology has been around for a while, it’s just recently begun creeping into the vehicle battery market. And we’re glad it’s coming, because according to Antigravity Batteries, the design promises to be sort of a middle-ground between a traditional AGM battery and ultra-lightweight (yet pricey) lithium-ion batteries.

For starters (ignition pun!), sodium-ion batteries are cheaper than lithium batteries, but still offer similar electrical performance.

More importantly, the Antigravity Batteries team tells us that, while sodium-ion batteries are indeed heavier than lithium batteries, they still weigh a lot(!!) less than their traditional lead-acid counterparts—we’re talking 50% less than an AGM battery.

Antigravity Batteries also points out that its sodium-ion batteries perform well even in extremely cold weather—something our readers up north will undoubtedly appreciate.

And Antigravity Batteries explains that the sodium-ion chemistry itself is extremely safe due to its lower energy density and material stability.

So, in short, sodium-ion batteries look like affordable alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, offering near identical power and performance, while only giving up a little bit in the overall weight department.

Although the folks at Antigravity Batteries were mum on when these new batteries will hit the market, they displayed several battery sizes in the SEMA New Products Showcase, for both street vehicle and powersports applications. So we’re optimistic we’ll be seeing them soon.
