Since we’re based in the snow belt, there aren’t too many OnAllCylinders staffers that enjoy wrestling with crusty old exhaust systems. Indeed, rust and corrosion can easily make even the simplest muffler job a titanic struggle.

Case in point: the simple task of prying off a rubber exhaust hanger.

Thanks to what we assume is some sort of alchemy, the Northeast Ohio road salt fuses the rubber to the steel hanger—and nothing short of a reciprocal saw and some well-placed profanity can break them free.

That is, until we discovered Exhaust Hanger Removal Pliers.

These handy little gadgets can save you a ton of frustration. They simply slip over the hanger bracket and require only modest hand pressure to slide the rubber shock mount off the steel hanger pin.

Voilà, the mount is loose and your hands aren’t sore.

Tip: We still recommend hitting the hanger with some spray lube or penetrating oil first, just to help it slide along the pin more easily.

Better still, these pliers let you work with precision, so you’re not yanking and pulling and clanging your exhaust system around, potentially causing other issues in the process. (They also help prevent crusty grit from falling in your eyes and hair if you’re laying on your back during the battle!)

Most importantly, these tools allow you to better control the removal process, so you’re not greeted with a sudden Thunk! when the hangar finally breaks free and slams your heavy exhaust system down onto the concrete.

Regardless if you live in the rust belt or not, these pliers can save you a ton of time and hassle. But the best news is, they’re pretty darn affordable. So if you do a lot of exhaust work, it’s a no-brainer to toss a set of Exhaust Hangar Removal Pliers in your toolbox.

Your hands—and your vehicle—will thank you.
