Venture off-road enough times, and you’ll likely have to cross some water sooner or later. And while you may not think a rut or a stream could get you into trouble, if you don’t have the proper water fording technique, you may find yourself over your head—maybe even literally in extreme cases.

And we’re not just talking about the dangers of soggy socks here either, it’s very easy to hydrolock an engine, typically with disastrous consequences. (Hence, why snorkel intakes are so popular.)

Suffice it to say, make sure you know what you’re doing before venturing into any water deeper than a puddle.
