Whether it’s for a holiday or birthday, this Tools Under 30 Dollars Gift Guide Series shows you important, yet somewhat uncommon, tools that any gearhead would want.

Today, let’s talk about Spark Plug Boot Removers.

A little while ago, we ran an article on the importance of using dielectric grease. And one of the main uses we referenced was on spark plug boots. That’s because, thanks a zillion underhood heat cycles, spark plug boots have a knack for fusing themselves to the spark plug body, making them darn-near impossible to remove without destroying the boot and ignition wire in the process.

Even with a healthy dollop of dielectric grease, it can still be a problem—which is why you need to say hello to our friend the Spark Plug Boot Removal Tool.

Since you don’t need to get your hands so deep into the engine bay, a good spark plug boot remover reduces the chance of your hand glancing off a baking-hot header tube or manifold too. (Image/Lisle)

Though there are a few different designs, they all do the same basic job: helping you safely pull and pry the boot off the spark plug, so you can remove the plugs. Not only does this protect the wires from damage, it makes the job much quicker and easier.

A lot of gearheads don’t know these tools exist and spend a boatload of time prying off their ignition wires (or just yank ’em off recklessly) with every spark plug job. So a good spark plug boot removal tool is a smart gift to give and receive. Better still, there’s a good chance you can find a nice one for under 30 bucks.
