GMC turned a lot of heads when it pulled the wraps off the zero-emissions, 350-mile range Hummer EV late last year. Now, GMC is testing the electric truck’s metal….err….mettle in the inaugural season of the new all-electric Extreme E off-road race series.

In a multi-year sponsorship with famed motorsports team Chip Ganassi Racing, the GMC Hummer EV will compete in five races for the 2021 Extreme E season:

  • Desert X Prix: AlUla, Saudi Arabia: April 3-4
  • Ocean X Prix: Lac Rose, Senegal: May 29-30
  • Arctic X Prix: Kangerlussuaq, Greenland: Aug. 28-29
  • Amazon X Prix: Para, Brazil: Oct. 23-24
  • Glacier X Prix: Patagonia, Argentina: Dec. 11-12

The 550 horsepower SUVs that Chip Ganassi Racing is campaigning are based on the GMC Hummer EV, and boast unique graphics and bodywork. Veteran off-road racers Kyle LeDuc and Sara Price will be sharing driving duties.

Extreme E is wheel-to-wheel off-road racing across a diverse set of terrain. The courses stretch over several miles, include a driver change at the midway point, and feature four cars in each race. Racing occurs over two days, in several sessions, and the teams are limited to a single battery charge for each day.
