NASCAR driver John Andretti, the nephew of racing legend Mario Andretti, died following a battle with colon cancer. He was 56.

John Andretti raced many different types of cars, but is best known for running in NASCAR’s Cup series.

In addition to his 393 races in NASCAR’s top series, John Andretti raced in the Indianapolis 500 12 times. In 1994, after participating in the Indy 500, John Andretti also raced in the Coca-Cola 600 that same night, and he was the first driver to ever pull double duty on the weekend many race fans consider the best of the year.

“We will forever carry with us John’s genuine spirit of helping others first and himself second,” Andretti Autosport said in a statement.

To the entire Andretti family, and their many friends and fans, we send our condolences and prayers.
