The Ford F-Series trucks have been the top-selling vehicles in the United States for 35 straight years so no one expected anything except further excellence from the 2018 Ford F-150, which is getting engine upgrades, including a new 3.0L Powerstroke turbodiesel V6 option, and updates to both its front and rear.

Power is going up. Fuel efficiency and trailer ratings are improving. The king of auto sales (which outpaced Chevrolet’s truck lineup by more than 245,000 last year) continues to rule the light-duty pickup truck kingdom with no signs of slowing down.

It must be tempting to rest on their laurels atop the bestselling-vehicle mountain, but it’s nice to see the gang at Ford is taking nothing for granted and striving for continuous improvement in its bellwether lineup.

Here are some notable updates:

  • Base engine reduced from 3.5L to 3.3L, and now features a port fuel and direct-injection system
  • 10-speed auto transmission no longer exclusive to 3.5L EcoBoost; now paired with 2.7L EcoBoost and 5.0L Ti-VCT V8
  • Turbodiesel V6 expected for Spring 2018
