An ELD isn’t just for the professional teams—the law may require one for your trailer, too. (Image/Pinterest)

As part of the 2012 Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration required commercial carriers to replace their traditional paper logs with a digital equivalent, called an electronic logging device (ELD).

At first glance, you may think that these new guidelines only affect the commercial carriers, and that the “Not For Hire” decal on your race trailer makes you exempt from requiring an ELD.

The law’s actual wording is nuanced however, which is why this informative post by the United States Motorsports Association (USMA) caught our attention.
