Serpentine pulley systems offer some considerable advantages over V-belt systems.
As we covered in our post on What You Need to Know when Choosing Pulleys, serpentine belts offer greater resistance to stretching and slippage. That translates into better ability to handle today’s higher-revving, higher-horsepower engines than V-belts. It also means less noise (dreaded squeal), greater engine efficiency, and less belt changes. Plus, the single-belt design of serpentine systems offers a cleaner, more modern look that’s preferred by a many hot rodders.
On top of all that, serpentine systems are typically fairly simple to install. A trouble-free installation requires a quality, comprehensive kit with hardware–readily available from companies like March Performance, Eddie Motorsports, or Billet Specialties–basic tools, and a little bit of patience. Exhibit A: This Eddie Motorsports serpentine pulley kit installation by OnAllCylinders’ contributor Jeff Smith. Jeff installed the kit on a small block Chevy engine in about an hour while providing a few helpful tips along the way.
